The World Garden: Revolutionizing Urban Farming

Eddie J DeJong's Award-Winning Design for Sustainable Indoor/Outdoor Gardening

In an era of rapid urbanization, the ability to grow one's own food is becoming increasingly vital. Eddie J DeJong, in collaboration with Vita Gardens, has designed an innovative solution: The World Garden. This indoor/outdoor garden, winner of the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable, offering a unique solution to the challenges of urban farming.

The World Garden is more than just a garden; it's a statement about self-sustainability and the power of nutritious eating. Inspired by the need to provide urban dwellers with the means to grow their own food, this design is a testament to the importance of vegetables and healthy living. As DeJong explains, "Vegetables and nutritious eating are at the core of living a happy, healthy life."

What sets The World Garden apart is its unique features. It includes grow lights, an expandable design, a digital programmable timer, and even braille coordinates built into the mould for universal garden planning. It also comes with an overflow reservoir, a grow trellis, and rubber castors for easy mobility. All these features are housed in a BPA-free polymer structure, making it safe for both the user and the environment.

The World Garden was created using injection-molded self-watering technology, with BPA-free ABS and PP polymers. This self-watering design waters plants from the roots up, ensuring optimal growth. One of the design's most notable features is the integrated braille coordinates, which allow individuals with limited sight to plan and maintain their garden independently.

The World Garden is not just a product; it's a lifestyle. It is designed to fit seamlessly into your living space or outdoor patio, integrating food growing into your personal lifestyle. The design project began in February 2015, and the first production samples were seen in February 2017. This two-year journey was filled with creative, technical, and financial challenges, but the result is a product that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

The World Garden is a response to the growing urbanization of our world. According to the United Nations, about 66% of the world's population will be urbanized by 2050. This trend, coupled with the increasing desire for sustainability and homegrown food, led to the creation of The World Garden. As DeJong puts it, "The World Needs Vegetables!"

In conclusion, The World Garden is a testament to the power of design in addressing real-world challenges. It is a product that not only looks good but also does good, promoting sustainability, healthy living, and inclusivity. Eddie J DeJong and Vita Gardens have truly created a product that is worthy of the Silver A' Furniture Design Award it received in 2017.
